Solo's Warriors
Veteran Recreation Ohio is proud to award a $2,000 grant to Solo’s Warriors, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Dickinson, Texas. This funding will support their Ohio Veteran Deer Camp, an annual hunting retreat designed to bring together veterans for camaraderie, healing, and outdoor recreation.

Each year, a group of veterans gathers during hunting season for a weekend of connection, shared experience, and mental wellness. This year’s camp will serve 15 veterans, offering a supportive and therapeutic environment focused on reducing isolation and promoting mental health awareness.

The grant will help cover costs for supplies including deer corn, ammunition, food, and lodging, ensuring that all participants can attend without any financial burden. Solo’s Warriors continues to raise awareness for mental health and aims to end veteran suicide by using recreation as a path toward recovery and brotherhood.

Project Healing Waters
Veteran Recreation Ohio is proud to support the Project Healing Waters Columbus Chapter with funding for their annual Battle of Steelhead Alley event. This grant will help cover a full week of expenses including food, lodging, equipment, transportation, and housing for the dozens of veterans taking part in this incredible fishing experience.

Each year, veterans from across Ohio gather to compete for the coveted Steelhead Alley trophy, and the Columbus Chapter is determined to bring it home for the third year in a row. (Sorry, Rocky River—but you might want to start practicing now, because your chances this year are about as slim as a steelhead in July.)

Beyond the friendly rivalry, this trip has proven to be one of the most powerful and healing experiences of the year for the veterans involved. The camaraderie, time in nature, and sense of accomplishment on the water help participants return home renewed, hopeful, and in a noticeably improved state of mental health.

We’ll continue to share updates and photos as the trip unfolds and results roll in—stay tuned to see if Columbus keeps the streak alive!
