Grant Application Overview
Veteran Recreation Ohio (VRO) proudly supports programs that use recreation as a path toward healing and connection for veterans. Our grant program provides funding to nonprofit and community organizations that create meaningful recreational therapy opportunities across Ohio.

Before requesting an application, please review the details below. These will help you understand the process, determine eligibility, and ensure you have everything ready to complete your grant submission

About the VRO Grant Program
Veteran Recreation Ohio funds recreational therapy initiatives that empower and heal veterans through shared experiences. Grants typically support activities such as outdoor adventures, fitness, wellness programs, team-based recreation, and events that strengthen veteran community ties.

Approved grants may receive up to $5,000, with larger requests subject to additional reporting and review by the VRO Board. Projects must be completed within one year of receiving funds, and a Grantee Report will be required at the end of the project.

Who Can Apply:
Eligible applicants include registered 501(c)(3) nonprofits, public institutions, and community or charitable organizations that align with our mission to connect Ohio veterans through recreation.

Eligibility Notes:

Requests must fund a specific project or event, not general operating expenses or capital improvements.

Fundraising events, endowments, or construction costs are not eligible.
-
Projects must demonstrate a direct benefit to Ohio veterans.
What You’ll Need to Have Ready
Before beginning your official application, please have the following prepared:

Organization name, address, and contact information

501(c)(3) registration number (if applicable)

Organization mission statement (max 200 words)

Description of your programs and services

Project title, overview, and implementation plan (max 300 words)

Estimated total cost and amount requested

Number of veterans served

Detailed expense breakdown

Confirmation that your project aligns with VRO’s mission
You will also be asked to indicate whether your program serves all veterans or specifically disabled veterans, and whether participation fees are required.
Reporting & Agreement
Grantee Report Requirements
At the conclusion of your project, VRO requires a short report outlining how the funds were used and the impact on veterans served. Reports must include:

Organization name and date

Summary of your mission and the grant’s impact

How the project was promoted
-
Number of veterans benefitting
-
How the grant specifically addressed your stated goals
-
Any changes to your initial project scope
-
Results and measurable outcomes
-
Supporting photos and data (if available)
Grant Terms and Conditions
By submitting a grant application, your organization agrees to:

Provide accurate and complete information.
-
Use all funds strictly for the approved project.
-
Comply with VRO’s reporting and audit requirements.
-
Allow VRO to share news or updates about your funded project.
-
Return unused funds or unapproved expenditures if required.
The full agreement must be signed by an authorized representative of your organization before funds are released.
