Veteran Recreation Ohio is proud to have nine Ohio veterans representing our team in the Columbus Marathon half and full marathon events. Through the support of VRO, these veterans were given the opportunity to participate and are now using their marathon journey to help raise funds for veteran recreation programs and events throughout Ohio.

Below, you can learn more about each runner, their story, and why this event matters to them. Supporters can choose to contribute to the entire team campaign or donate directly to an individual runner. Every contribution helps Veteran Recreation Ohio continue creating meaningful recreational opportunities, community events, and wellness programs for veterans across the state.

Melissa Tilton

My name is Missy, and I’ve been actively running since 2015. I really love the running community in Central Ohio, so much support from everyone. I currently reside in Canal Winchester, Ohio with my husband, Chris, and our sweet rescue dog, Lucy. I have twins that are now 34 years old and they both reside in the area as well. My son started running in 2017 because I made it look like so much fun. I’ve also participated in the Columbus Marathon every year since 2016, with running the half or full marathon depending on the year.

Why does running matter to you?

Running matters to me because it’s one of the simplest ways I can take care of both my body and my mind at the same time. Running is also something I can always rely on. No matter how busy or unpredictable life gets, it’s a constant that helps me reset, stay balanced and move forward - literally and mentally.

        ARMY

        Jacob Spitznogle

I spent 11 years in the Army, starting as a 12N with a deployment to Afghanistan and missions across Europe before transitioning into recruiting. Along the way, I developed a strong work ethic, leadership skills, and a passion for helping others succeed. I’m getting out of the Army this June and moving into cybersecurity contracting. At home, I’m a husband and father of two, and life stays busy with our two Australian Shepherds always keeping things interesting.

Why does running matter to you?

I run mostly for my mental health, and to show myself and my family I can do hard things.

          Ned Barber

Active duty paramedic and paratrooper currently on recruiting orders, born and raised in Newark, Ohio. I’m a Newark High School graduate and studied at The Ohio State University main campus and Fayetteville Technical Community College. Proud dad to an 11-year-old daughter. All-around adventure man and lifelong nerd that’s into video games, books, and anime. Currently training for a 100KM race with the long-term goal of completing a 100-miler. Leaning forward into my retirement with a goal of attending the military’s physician assistant program.

Why does running matter to you?

Running matters to me because it forces me to do hard things on purpose. It’s one of the simplest ways to challenge myself, stay disciplined, and keep showing up even when I don’t feel like it. Every run is a chance to push past comfort and prove something to myself. There’s also something deeper in it, when you really push, you meet a different version of yourself. The one that doesn’t quit, that stays steady under pressure, that finds a way to keep moving forward. That’s the version of me I’m trying to build, and running is how I get there.

            Ohio Air National Guard

            Travis Lidner

My name is Travis Lindner. I joined the Air National Guard right out of high school in 2007. I was a Security Forces MP at the Rickenbacker 121st Air Refueling Wing and in the fall of 2011 I was deployed with my unit to Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan for 6 months. In 2012 I honorably discharged from the guard. In 2017 I was invited on a fishing trip with an organization called American Hero Hunt. They take Veterans and First Responders out on hunting and fishing trips to give back and heal through the great outdoors. I was blown away by the hospitality and camaraderie on that trip! I knew that was something I wanted to be part of so attended the next board meeting and have been on the board ever since. Last year we took 40 heroes out on trips and looking to add more in 2026!

Why does running matter to you?

Running is a therapy that I have drifted away from and want to get back into it. There is something about zoning out on a run and letting your mind be calm.

                Al Amposta

Joined the Air Force right out of high school and served from 1988-1999. After military service, I was a civilian federal employee in the FAA for over 20 years. I have six adult children, eleven grandchildren and currently live in Fremont Ohio.

Why does running matter to you?

I started my running journey while in the military. I enjoy being a part of the running community, but I had to stop running a few years ago due to a major back injury that contributed to poor physical and mental health. I finally decided to go through major back surgery and as soon as I could started running again, and my overall health has drastically improved since. All my kids are joining me for the Columbus marathon, my first since my injury, and I just thankful to god for his blessings.
